Hong Kong staff and global volunteers visit Congo
A team from Hong Kong and the US, comprising of Olivia, Po, Stephanie, Evelyn, Margaret, Phoebe, Bruce, and Peter, ventured to Congo for 3 weeks in February. To skip ahead and watch their short videos about this trip, please go to the end of this page.
The group was just in time for the safe arrival of our latest container full of crucial medical supplies, furniture, and equipment for the new hospital. They worked with the Congo team to unload and organise the cargo.
As the journey progressed, the team tackled diverse tasks, from organising inventory to technical support, including setting up the complex key systems and brilliant eyeglasses displays.
The team’s first visit to the Interim Eye Centre was joyful as they saw the facility and met the staff in person. The dedication and professionalism of the Ouesso team, from patient intake to administration, impressed the visitors.
Observing Henri perform sight-saving eye surgeries, assisted by interns Franck and Orchidee, was a privilege. These procedures aimed to transform lives, and the team was grateful to be part of this meaningful work.
One memorable patient was Armande who repeatedly hugged her mother when she could see again! Their joy was contagious! It was proof that New Sight was serving the community through its services and bringing transformation to lives.
Midway through the trip, a combined birthday celebration for staff and a donor plaque unveiling ceremony added to the sense of community and appreciation. Margaret’s unveiling of the plaque dedicated to her mother highlighted the enduring support that makes the organization’s work possible.
Special recognition should be given to Peter, who extended his stay to continue making an impact in Congo. Later, his departure was met with heartfelt appreciation for his generosity and faith, and he made meaningful connections within the local community.
